Search Console is the only first-party record of how Google actually treats your site. It is also incomplete, delayed, partially anonymised, and quietly disagrees with every other tool you own. This is everything we have written about working with it anyway.
The honest framing, up front. Treat Search Console as a directional sample, not a ledger. Chart totals and table totals do not match, and Google says so in its own documentation. That is a permanent feature of the product, not a bug you can fix.
Everything below is about working accurately inside that constraint rather than pretending it is not there.
1. Segment the data so it means something
An unfiltered Performance report is a list. Segmentation is what turns it into an answer.
Google Search Console Regex: The Complete Library
The main resource. Every pattern worth running, organised by the question it answers, plus the RE2 compatibility table explaining why a large share of the GSC regex circulating online silently fails. Includes copy-paste prompts for ChatGPT and Claude, and a troubleshooting table for when a pattern returns nothing.

2. Work out how much of it to trust
Before you build a report on this data, know where it bends.
Google Search Console Data Is Not Accurate
The catalogue of gaps, with practitioner quotes: Google Business Profile clicks that never appear, privacy filtering, the 1,000-row export cap, sampling, and reporting delay. Updated with a worked example where a keyword tool reported 10 US searches a month for a query that logged 1,096 US impressions from a single URL over 16 months.
One search produces at most one impression for one URL. So either the tool understates volume by roughly seven times, or Search Console counts impressions that do not correspond to searches. Nothing available can tell you which.Pros and Cons List for Google Search Console
The plain assessment of what the tool is good at and where it stops, without the vendor gloss.
Analyzing Drops in Search Traffic
What to check, and in what order, when the line goes down. A practitioner roundup rather than a single opinion, which matters because the honest answer is usually “it depends what kind of drop”.
3. Find what is missing
The most valuable number in Search Console is often the one it will not show you.
Dark clicks, and why the gap is the finding
Search Console withholds anonymised and low-volume queries, so a page can report 200 clicks while the query table accounts for 50. The method is to pull by page first, not by query, then diff the page total against the sum of named queries. That difference is your anonymised gap, and you should size it before trusting any single number underneath it.
Regex is one leg of the triangulation: apply a brand pattern, then its inverse, and watch how the totals move. Combine with third-party volume where you rank on page one but Search Console reports no clicks, and with analytics landing-page sessions as the third corner.
This produces an estimate with a confidence interval, not a measurement. Anyone presenting recovered dark clicks as a precise number is overselling it.SEO SOP: AI Bot Access-Log Analysis
Server logs see what Search Console cannot: which crawlers actually reached you, how often, and what they got. Relevant now that AI crawlers behave differently from Googlebot and neither appears in the Performance report.
4. Turn positions into money
A ranking chart is not a business case. These convert Search Console output into a number a client can act on.
The Expected-CTR Model
Takes position data and models the clicks you should be getting at that position, so the shortfall becomes a missed-revenue figure rather than an observation. The most useful thing you can build directly on top of Performance report data.

5. Check you are even in the index
The cheapest diagnostic in SEO, and the one skipped most often.
Is the Site You Are Paying For Even Indexed?
Before you analyse performance, confirm there is something to analyse. Plenty of sites under active retainer have pages Google has never stored.
