This is a curated recap of the weekly #SEOchat on Twitter, in case you missed it. There are a lot of useful insights in these tweets, but they go by so quickly that you might miss them! Here’s my best effort at bringing all those answers and questions into one place. This week’s focus is all about SEO jobs, hiring, cross-over and more about work in SEO in 2022.

A1: As a writer, this job is heavily SEO, so that’s one. Also, our designers are getting nudged to it. And for our SEO vendor, everyone from tech to sales has to have an understanding. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

1. Website developer
2. Content writer
3. Project manager #seochat

Elizabeth Rule

1: Product manager (especially in publishing)
2: Director of content/EIC There’s several others I could say as well

JDH

CEO CTO Sales Director All three positions can be helped by knowledge about SEO & how it can make their decisions efficient & cost-effective for the company #SEOChat

A2: Access to GA for starters! I also utilize SEO writing websites that help me reach target scores so the writing is optimized for the SEO to try to reach the elusive SERP. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

Ahrefs would be my go-to option. That or Site Bulb because they both perform a ton of functions with relatively easy interfaces for non-SEOs to understand (with a slight learning curve). #seochat PLUS Search Console.

Elizabeth Rule

A2. Now that my position is (mostly) non-SEO, I cannot live without: GDS SEMRush Sitebulb I can keep optimizing our site, & building better pages/content, with these tools #SEOChat

Content managers! #seochat

Mordy Oberstein

Typically, I see entrepreneurship – either developing a tool they wish they had (see @getstat) or starting their own practice. Sometimes you’ll get those that move up to Director/VP of Marketing, but usually only if they have PPC experience. product marketing manager too.

Jack Treseler

A3: Consulting, for sure. We need that. But inevitably, I think they move into start-ups, get them on the right track and then repeat the process. At least that’s what my SEO peeps from the mid 00s did. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

I’ve seen a big move recently to niche sites, blogging, and affiliate marketing. When you can build your own site and do the SEO for it, the world wide web is your oyster. #seochat

Elizabeth Rule

A3. I’ve seen so many different movements, but usually within marketing. I know I’ve moved between Social Media, Content, and Customer Success.

Jamar Ramos | Your Black Superhero

You can rank #1 in a week… Debunk? Easy. Show them they aren’t ranked after a week#seochat

Mordy Oberstein

A4: MYTH: Your content has to be exceptional to break through to reach SERP. No, it’s just as much about bugs, load speeds, image coding, system errors, website setup, etc. that are out of the writer’s control. It has to be a team effort. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

Links don’t matter. Or that thousands of low-quality, paid links will improve rankings. Links are a pillar of SEO, without them Google can’t find you! #seochat

Elizabeth Rule

A4. That you need to build your own website to test your SEO theories to become a better SEO. No, you can work at a job that allows you to test your theories on a website, learn how to be a better SEO, and make money at the same time.#SEOChat

Jamar Ramos | Your Black Superhero

A5: It will continue to thrive, but so much clarity is needed. There are 100s of avenues to pursue, whether technical, link-building, writing, or data gathering, so specific skills may be needed more than others. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

I could see it bursting for sure, considering nothing lasts forever. However, I expect it to thrive for a while as companies are finally understanding the value in QUALITY SEO and continue to invest in it. #seochat that is, as long as robots don’t take over completely

Elizabeth Rule

Q5. I think we’ll move away from SEO in job titles, & think of marketing people as more multi-channel. SEO will be blended more into the day-to-day functions of people, as it can be cross-trained with Social, Content, Email, or other niche-focused individuals #SEOChat

Jamar Ramos | Your Black Superhero

A6: Work w/ an SEO expert who is willing to share what they know. Some people want to you learn it on your own when a shared knowledge base is so much more valuable. #SEOChat

Pam Portland

Q6. Find someone who can talk to you about SEO in YOUR language. Anyone who has a desire can be an SEO. Not everyone can be a good mentor, or train someone. Find the “expert” who makes SEO “click” for you, & it becomes a simple discipline #SEOChat

Jamar Ramos | Your Black Superhero

Find a part of SEO that interests you, like links, technology, or content. Trying to learn it all can be overwhelming & picking a pillar of SEO that interests you will make it more fun! That’s why I picked #LocalSEO I love working with #GMB & fighting spam, so it works for me! #seochat
