Join us as we navigate through their insights, distilling invaluable lessons for every enterprise SEO captain out there.

Breakdown of Insights and Best Practices:

  • The Challenges of Bureaucracy: As aptly described by Mordy Oberstein, enterprise SEO often feels like trying to maneuver a fast starship but a slow-moving machine. The multilayered approvals, unmanageable marketing expectations, and distant dev teams make it a challenging endeavor.
  • Cannibalization Concerns: It’s essential to watch out for blog keywords, as Mordy points out. Cannibalizing your own content can prove detrimental in the long run.
  • Bridging the Communication Gap: Whether it’s aligning with a small team of executives or finding common ground across departments, clear communication is paramount. Simon Cox and Travis emphasize the importance of hosting AMA sessions early on, ensuring concerns are addressed, and collective buy-in is achieved.
  • Technical SEO and Development: Working with dev teams and ensuring they’re onboard is a battle on its own. Moreover, Simon Cox and Travis discuss the importance of robust, scalable templates that can be applied across businesses of any size.
  • Content Creation and Optimization: Travis emphasizes the irreplaceable value of authoritative, human-touched content. Meanwhile, Gerry White and Sweepsify delve into the nuances of content optimization, especially for a brand’s digital footprint in enterprise SEO.
  • Case Studies & Real-world Experiences: Nitin Manchanda’s work with @headout serves as a shining example of the intricacies of enterprise SEO in action. Similarly, Simon Cox’s experiences provide vital lessons on tackling issues inherent to enterprise SEO.
  • Agility in Enterprise SEO: Sweepsify and Rohan Ayyar stress the importance of ensuring SEO remains a priority for the top brass. When the C-suite understands and prioritizes SEO, it leads to more agile, adaptable strategies.
  • Looking Beyond Borders: Delving into international SEO requires a deep understanding of the client’s marketing plans and business nuances. Travis and Gianluca Fiorelli discuss the myriad of factors, from legal issues to cultural nuances, that can influence international SEO strategies.
  • The Human Element: While technical prowess is essential, Simon Cox, Travis, and Praveen Kumar stress the importance of forging strong relationships with other departments and understanding when to choose one’s battles wisely.

How do you define “Enterprise SEO,” and what sets it apart from traditional SEO approaches?

How do I say this nicely…. The bureaucracy. Enterprise is a fast starship but a slow moving machine

Mordy Oberstein

Slow, frustrating, like trying to push a steam roller up hill

Gerry White SEO geek

A1 SEO that pays quite well but comes with a lot of baggage – mainly unmanageable marketing expectations along with unreachable dev teams (due to a 12 month workbook). It’s a much longer game – years not months.

Simon Cox

What are the key challenges faced when implementing SEO strategies in large organizations?

Cannibalization! We have this on our hub …. Gotta be carful to watch out for blogs keywords right

@geochinguhttps://wix.com/seo/learn

Mordy Oberstein

A2: The layers of approvals, and disparate access points (to platforms) can be an impediment to speed. There is also typically much more education required. It’s easier to find common ground with a team of 5 executives/owners than with 5 departments.

travis

A2 Tech SEO – getting dev teams to buy in and getting it booked in. Marketing: Rome wasn’t built in a day conversation. Brand: no it’s not going to kill it. Legal and Compliance: Endless why questions.

Simon Cox

How can enterprises overcome organizational silos to ensure seamless collaboration between teams for SEO success?

A3. I missed a good one! For a seamless collaboration, remove all internal barriers, make it easy for people to have an open mind instead of becoming territorial

Montse Cano – SEO

A3 Sprint teams! FTW! or strategic beveraging after work. It’s finding the right people to talk to that can allow thier teams to get stuff done. Sometimes it takes bargaining but get buy in at the highest level you can.

Simon Cox

A3: Hosting AMA meetings *early* on can kill two birds with one stone: 1) Questions across teams can be addressed. Concerns can be documented and considered throughout the process. 2) Collective buy-in can be achieved. “We invited you today for your valuable input.”

Share your tips on conducting a comprehensive SEO audit for large websites with complex structures.

you don’t – you tackle problems, I think one thing we’ve learnt from various places is that you almost go in an tackle one small issue at a time. Often on a subset of pages, or you audit a set of templates, not the site.

Gerry White SEO geek

A4 Ground work before you start. Ensure you have a full understanding of what you are about to do – what are the domains and subdomains involved.

Simon Cox

A4: Creating robust, thoughtful templates is critical. Done well, they can scale across any sized business. Almost certainly “large websites with complex structures” are unnecessarily so. Task 1 may be consolidating content & implementing appropriate canonicals + 301s.

How can enterprises leverage AI and automation to streamline their SEO processes and achieve better results?

A5: As of now, I firmly believe there is no substitute for authoritative, helpful content. Generative AI tools get you partway there. For now, they can expedite copywriting legwork, but we need human finesse to overcome “hallucinations” & brand/technical inaccuracies.

travis

Using techniques like embeddings retrieval and GSC queries data to find out opportunities to merge pages AND similar approaches for finding out internal linking opportunities for existing pages. Also this can be extended with some additional code to have functionality of recommending from which page to link and what anchor text to use. Like if some enterprise site is publishing a new page, then they can ask model to find out all exisiting pages from where they should link to that new page. (this would be really use for large enterprise sites that publish a lot like news ones)

Gagan Ghotra

A5 Look for processes that your teams do or would like to do on a regular basis and set up AI and scripts to achieve that. Every step should have some element of human interaction though to ensure it isn’t damaging your business or your health.

Discuss the importance of content optimization and scalability in enterprise SEO strategies

this oddly is a massive challenge, you’d think it’s easier, but often you get LESS resource in an enterprise company – Limited resource+ more demand + often too many bosses and no actual writers,

Gerry White SEO geek

A6: Content optimization and scalability directly impact a brand’s digital footprint when it comes to enterprise SEO. It determines search visibility and audience reach.

Sweepsify

A6: Content development (done well) remains a substantial investment in time & energy. To scale, no sub for hard work. Develop page templates with structured data built in. Define required content blocks & write to these prompts. Don’t re-create with each new piece.

Share your success stories or case studies of implementing enterprise-level SEO and the impact it had on business growth

We recently published one for a travel brand called

@headout and that’s definitely one of my top 3 case studies ever https://t.co/6Mem3j70FO

Nitin Manchanda

A7 my fav one was auditing a brands global digital estate. In the end I found over 400 websites of which only 120ish were being focused on at all. Massive clean up went ahead and helped stop a lot of phishing.

Simon Cox

A7: Biggest win “theme” to share is overcoming out-of-the-box web builder header issues. Many default CSS’s do no favors for SEO efforts. Universal wins: – Revising text tags that render nav links as headers – Retooling CSS so designers have <p> “headers” to freely use

travis

How can enterprises stay agile and adapt to frequent algorithm updates and industry changes?

A8 they certainly can be IF the right people at the right level are committed to keeping on top of change and spend resource monitoring it. Normally they have better things to think about though and in most cases probably don’t even need it as their brand is strong.

Simon Cox

A8Q: Great question! What brands do you think are exceling at agile enterprise SEO right now?

Sweepsify

The only way is to make sure SEO is a priority for the C-suite. Enterprises change only when people change them. Processes just keep them moving

Rohan Ayyar

What tools and metrics do you use to measure the success of SEO initiatives in large organizations?

A9 I have a range of digital spanners I like to throw in to peoples works to see what happens.

Simon Cox

Need to get your attribution right. Try and get leads/sales from SEO to show up in the organization’s in-house model, if they have one.

Rohan Ayyar

It’s all about the north star metric, it can be new users, it can be money, it can be growth in a certain market, aov, visibility …. Tagging in

@chrisgreenseo who gets excited by this

Gerry White SEO geek

What are your best practices for handling international SEO challenges in a multi-national enterprise?

A10: Caveat – No direct experience 1) The macro, governing process & templates must be language-agnostic. This delivers stability + consistency. 2) Potentially hire native teams to perform country-specific work. This accounts for cultural nuances + language accuracy.

travis

First thing knowing every single details of the international marketing plan and the business of the client. There are so many “non SEO” things that can influence international SEO (i.e. legal issues), that if you know them later, that could mean needing to change all strategy.

Gianluca Fiorelli

Any final tips or advice for SEO professionals working in large organizations?

A11 You are not alone – get out and talk to others doing SEO!

Simon Cox

A11: Make fast friends with developers, designers, & product teams. Your wins will be their wins, too. There are enough challenges getting top level buy-in, engagement, understanding, & appreciation. Align with the “worker bees” first. Together, you build the hive.

travis

Sometimes, learn to nod your head instead of reacting and regretting. Gather data before firing back.

Praveen Kumar

Enterprise SEO is not for the faint-hearted. From the various insights shared by industry professionals, several themes emerge. The intricacies of managing large-scale SEO initiatives include bureaucratic hurdles, the criticality of getting buy-ins from multiple departments, and the unending quest to streamline processes and procedures for scalability.

However, the challenges do not outweigh the potential rewards. As expressed by experts like Simon Cox, Travis, and Gerry White SEO geek, some of the keys to successful enterprise SEO lie in building strong collaborative relationships, especially with developers and design teams, investing in thorough groundwork before initiating projects, and continuously adapting to the ever-changing SEO environment.

One cannot stress enough the importance of harnessing AI tools judiciously while recognizing the irreplaceable value of human expertise. As Gagan Ghotra and Sweepsify pointed out, the blend of tech and touch is crucial, especially in a realm as expansive as enterprise SEO.

Lastly, as Praveen Kumar aptly put it, sometimes it’s best to take a step back, gather data, and strategize rather than reacting impulsively. In the vast ecosystem of enterprise SEO, patience, perseverance, and strategic thinking are invaluable assets.

In essence, enterprise SEO is a long game. It requires a blend of strategy, collaboration, and innovation. With the right approach, even the largest of ships can navigate the choppy waters of digital marketing, making headway one wave at a time.

Jeremy’s Take: Enterprise SEO Lives or Dies on Clean Processes

At enterprise scale the bottleneck isn’t tactics, it’s process. If the underlying workflow is messy, automating it just industrializes the mess. Get the process clean and repeatable first; then scale and automate. Otherwise you’re paying more to do the wrong thing faster.

Bradley Benner quote on not automating a sloppy process

If they don’t have clear processes in their own business, you can’t automate it — because then you’re just automating a sloppy process, and it becomes more work maintaining it than just doing it manually.
